Why using a fitness app makes you a more effective trainer

If you don’t get results as a PT, you don’t have a business.

Of course, there’s more that goes into running a successful PT business, such as having a good relationship with the client, your experience, your knowledge, your attention to their problem, and how you conduct a session.

Each one can help you keep clients for longer, but you can never get away from why they came to you in the first place, their goal. Every trainer will have their own way of getting a client to that goal, some methods will be more effective than others.

I have found the better the overall package you can offer a client the better the results you will get with them. I don’t just mean during the sessions they have with you.

The client needs more than just being ‘beasted’ for one hour a week, they need a structure to stick to. What do they train in their own time? What do they do if they have an injury? What food do they eat and when etc?

The more work you do for a client in your own time will always lead to better results, as long as you get the client to follow your plan and commit to it. The following is what I do when I first have a client, most of which I do via our PT Buddy app:

  1. Do a thorough assessment to find out client’s weaknesses, so which areas they need to focus on first.

  2. Go through a client’s current lifestyle – food choices and exercise regime to find out the problem areas.

  3. Get the client to accept changes need to be made – get them to commit. This is a big one and I do not start with a new client until they accept.

  4. Build their training programs based on their goals and number of times they can train a week.

  5. Make lifestyle and nutrition changes for them to follow (whether this is a full change or small changes over time, which is what I’d recommend)

  6. Provide health and fitness tips for the client to understand what they need to do and why, so they are more likely to stick to it long term.

  7. Keep in touch with them on a regular basis to make sure they’re sticking to the plan.

  8. Allow the client to leave feedback, so you can see what they are good at or not, or areas they are struggling with.

All this takes time, which is why a lot of trainers don’t do it. They would do a session and leave them to it for the rest of the time. This is not the best way for a client to reach their goals and make them likely leave the trainer.

But the best trainers take it all on board and provide the client with all the information they need for that client to get their goal.

That’s why we started our app PT Buddy. I care about clients getting results, so I needed to provide more information for them to follow. I needed to perform an initial assessment on them, build them a training structure, and it needed to be built quickly and make sense to clients.

That’s how PT Buddy started, out of a need to help clients understand what they needed to do, and to help the trainers build their clients structure quicker than anything else available.

Using a fitness app will make a huge change to your fitness business, not just for you the trainer, making your professional in your offerings, as well as save you time and money too. But also, for your client, because knowing you care enough about their goals, that you have taken the time to do everything in your power to help them will help keep a strong relationship with that client.

If you’re not currently using an app to manage your fitness business, try out our two-week trial on PT Buddy and see what a difference it can make.
